A New Chapter…

To our valued CPC Community,

Most of you should have received emails by now with the news that we will be ceasing operations of CPC Santa Monica effective October 1, 2010. As we have already heard from many folks via phone, email, and social media, I wanted to personally express my gratitude for your passion, commitment, and boundless energy in our Core Performance community over the last several years. As Mark’s email indicated, you will forever be founding members of our community and of course a huge part of what made this Center special. Your email has additional information on what we will be providing all members in terms of continued commitment, but please don’t hesitate to reach out if there is anything Sarah, myself, or Marissa can do for you as we transition toward closure.

Sincerely,

Anthony Slater

College Football Anyone?

With fall on the horizon, a lot of sports are starting preseason camps or preseason games.  College football is one of the favorites during this time of the year.  Maybe it’s because we cheer on our Alma mater, root for a specific team, or follow a local team.  Whatever the case is, the football frenzy is beginning.

Over the summer, we had the pleasure and privilege to train several young athletes—including some who recently left to their respected schools.  One of these athletes, Blake Stanton, is a freshman at University of Oregon. He’s turning heads and climbing his way up on the roster.  Keep an eye out for this kid in the upcoming and future seasons with the Ducks.  Nice work Blake!

What Makes You Eat More Food

Audra Sampley’s Weight Loss Journey

Everyone is on a journey of some kind, whether it’s career, family, or a healthy lifestyle. Two weeks ago, a girl named Audra Sampley—who I haven’t spoken to in 13 years—reached out to me. She asked me to help her lose 150 pounds!

Audra is a wife, a student, and the mother of three children.  The most challenging part is that she lives in Alabama, while I’m here in Los Angeles.  The beauty of the situation is that this journey is all about the power of having the right mindset, which is something that we focus on here at Core Performance.

I’m not here to push her or make sure shes’ working out as hard as possible, and I can’t count her calories each day. What I can do is is challenge and encourage her to make the changes needed to live a healthy, more fulfilling lifestyle.  The rest is up to her.

In just two weeks, Audra has already lost 11 pounds by eating a balanced diet, exercising, keeping a positive outlook, and using the determination that comes from deep within. I hope that her journey will inspire you as much as she has inspired me.  Please follow Audra on her journey to weight loss! She could use your encouragement, and in the process, your life may be transformed as well!

What’s In Your Pantry?

The column Pantry Raid in the Los Angeles Times looks at what people actually eat each day and analyzes it. How would you stack up if our nutrition team took you up on this challenge? The latest entry in this series profiles a couple who eats a primarily vegan diet that isn’t as healthy as it could be. What are some small changes you could make to give yourself a bit more energy during the day?

Gua Sha

Those of you who’ve seen us in the physical therapy department know what a gua sha is.  It’s a plastic tool used to release soft tissue and fascia that surround the muscle and rests under the skin.  The interesting thing about the gua sha is that it was used by the Chinese about 1000 yrs ago.  Pretty amazing.  They were the world’s first physical therapists.

On Days You Drag….

Today, one of my colleagues told me he had “one of THOSE workouts” this morning, and I could totally relate. Don’t we all have those days when we’re just dragging out of bed, and it’s tough to get in to the gym? What do you do to fix it? Eat something to boost your energy? Put on your favorite song and just push through it?

I usually ask a friend to tag along with me on “THOSE” days for extra motivation. In the event that I can’t find a workout buddy, I look for external motivation like this woman’s incredible commitment to triathlon training or Da’Sean Butler’s hard work to rebound from injury at Athletes’ Performance, Florida. What do you do on days you don’t feel like getting to the gym?
